Bio

Josie is a constant traveler. During her childhood as the daughter of an Air Force officer, Josie lived in many different places, as varied as Washington, DC and Grand Forks, ND. Her family eventually settled in Wisconsin, where Josie attended high school. She was an active participant in a wide array of activities, from acting in school drama productions, to directing community service projects, to leading high school students in organized political debates. Through all of her experiences, she never lost her wanderlust, and spent much of her time devouring books about far off places and cultures.

Josie got her first taste of international travel while participating in summer exchange program to Unna, Germany while still in high school, and she was hooked. During her university studies at UW-Stevens Point, she spent a semester studying German in Magdeburg, Germany. During another semester spent studying in Szeged, Hungary, Josie discovered her great love of Central and Eastern Europe, traveling extensively throughout the region.

Upon returning to Wisconsin, she combined her newfound passion with her longstanding enthusiasm for the promotion of women’s rights, completing her senior honor’s thesis on the issues faced by women in the politically volatile areas of the former Yugoslavia. After finishing her degree in International Studies with an emphasis on Peace Studies, Josie moved to London, England to work with Survival International, the premier organization advocating for the rights of indigenous peoples the world over. She remains an avid lover of travel, of other cultures, and of learning anything and everything she can about the world!

After returning once again to the US, Josie found a place at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio of Madison. Two years later, Josie still loves her job and enjoys learning all about the wonderful world of dance! Josie would love to spend time on each of the continents (though perhaps not Antarctica…) and to write a book, or four! She is happily married to a wonderful art teacher, Charlie, and they live in Madison with the true love of Josie’s life, her cat, Q-Tip!
